Until his purchase and after, he spoke to every biker he came across, men and women, it did not matter. He asked every kind of question, what was better - belt drive or shaft drive? Is fuel injection better? What kind of jacket offered the best protection? Regardless of the topic, he always wanted to know more. Dad would just sit for hours and read the manual on how to ride and care for his bike. He took a couple of short lessons, and everyone said the bike was too big for him but he replied, "I am only buying one bike." He would not be influenced. Dad taped instructions on his windshield and he would take off early in the morning to practice before too many cars got on the country roads of Denmark, Maine. At the age of 70, Dad got his license! And he got it on his first try, I was so proud of him.
My father loved riding his motorcycle. He and his riding partner Andy would start most days early and go out for breakfast, then take off for a nice leisurely ride. On Sunday September 2, 2007, eight of us took off from South Paris Maine, Dad included, for a nice ride to Boothbay Harbor. That night Dad was exhausted and boasted that he had never gone that fast on his bike before. That was the last time that Dan, my husband and I rode with him. We all had a great time.
On the morning of September 6, 2007, my father left his
house around 8:00am oh his motorcycle to get a haircut. A half an hour
later our lives changed forever when a truck pulled out in front of him.
Dad laid his bike down to try and avoid the truck, but did not. Within
three minutes of being at Maine Medical Center, Dad died from his injuries.
In honor of my father, and to raise money for the Maine MS Society, The Smilin' Moose will host the "2nd Annual Arnold Dugmore Ride For MS." Dan, my husband, was diagnosed with MS in July of 2007. Last year we raised over $1000.00 for MS and hope to double it in 2009. Please join us on this years ride, we look forward to seeing you all. Dan and Arnold.
